How we source and verify the data

Every number on TrimFacts traces to a manufacturer document for that model year. This page explains the chain.

Sources, in order of authority

1. Manufacturer towing guides for the model year (Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide, GM Trailering Guide, Ram Towing Guide, Toyota towing and payload tables, Stellantis body-builder data). These list towing, GCWR and often payload by cab, bed, engine, axle ratio and package.
2. Owner's manuals, towing section, for ratings and hitch requirements the guide omits.
3. NHTSA vPIC for the canonical list of makes, models, model years, trims and GVWR class, so every page maps to a real vehicle.
4. EPA vehicle data for engine and drivetrain identification.

We do not use dealer blogs, forums or other aggregators as sources. When two manufacturer documents disagree, the towing guide for that exact model year wins and the discrepancy is noted on the page.

What "properly equipped" means

Manufacturer maximums assume the specific engine, axle ratio, tow package, hitch class and often a trailer brake controller. Our configuration tables state the package requirement in the note column so you can see which rows apply to a truck without it.

Ranges and dashes

GVWR and curb weight are shown as ranges across configurations. A dash means the manufacturer does not publish that value for that configuration; we never estimate a rating to fill a gap.

Updates

New model years are added when the manufacturer publishes the towing guide, usually in the autumn before the model year. Corrections are applied within a week of verification. Data snapshot: 2026-09-21.
